When in Congress you had to pass the test of impotence

If we search for congress in the RAE, the third and fourth meanings, with an initial capital letter, define it as the building where the deputies to the Cortes hold their sessions and the national assembly in some countries, respectively. Our Congress which, in theory, is the constitutional body that represents us, it seems that it exercises its legislative function thinking that, as the poem by Catullus said, , «pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo «.

This way of acting is more typical of the sixth meaning that defines it as:

Carnal intercourse

This definition, now in disuse, has its origin in the Middle Ages when the only way for women to dissolve the marriage was by alleging the impotence of her husband... but she had to prove it. To do this, husband and wife had to have sexual relations before the congress ; a group made up of doctors, midwives, clerics... before whom the accused had to demonstrate his virility . Many men blocked themselves before the group of onlookers and although if he did not measure up in the first instance he could ask for a second attempt, his manhood was in question. But this proof of impotence he had other versions… in a divorce case in York in 1433, a poor man named John had to undergo this ordeal :

a woman other than his wife showed him her naked breasts and with her hands she grabbed and rubbed the penis and testicles of the aforementioned John, and stimulated him as much as possible so that he would show his virility, but in all the aforementioned time, the aforementioned penis barely reached the seven centimeters long, without increasing or decreasing...
