History of Europe

One of the greatest leaps of faith in history

Another year, and gladly, I join the initiative of Senovilla and Ángel… Today we will talk about faith .

Today I will talk about one of the greatest acts of faith, understood as trust and hope , of history.

Dionysius I , also called Dionysius I the Elder, was a tyrant of Syracuse whose reign was marked by his clashes with Carthage for control of Sicily. One of the prisoners captured in the battle asked Dionisio to release him because he had to return to his family to deal with a case of life or death and then he would return to serve his sentence... death. Dionisio, who did not care to execute one or the other, proposed a deal:he would allow him to return home if he found someone to take his place, and if he did not return within the stipulated time, his substitute would be executed. Q>

The prisoner soldier mentioned the deal to a friend of his and he accepted it with all the consequences. At first, this show of trust by the one who was left as a hostage caused admiration among all, but as the days went by, admiration turned into mockery. Still, the hostage kept the faith. The day before the scheduled execution, in the midst of all the preparations, his friend showed up. That act of faith moved Dionysus and set them free .

We must not lose faith in humanity, which is like the ocean:it does not get dirty because some of its drops are dirty.
