Classes of whores in ancient Rome.

In the month of April we told you about a day of whores in ancient Rome, today we are going to see the kinds of whores that we could find.

  • Delicatae :they were the luxury whores to which only the most powerful had access. The ones that are now chosen with a catalog and a little apartment is put on them.
  • Famosae :women who without any need, due to their social position, practiced sex for pure pleasure. The most significant case would be Valeria Messalina , wife of Emperor Claudius. How libidinous this woman would be who, taking advantage of the absence of her husband, organized a contest in the palace with the prostitutes of Rome based on seeing who could sleep with more men in a single day. The "college" of prostitutes accepted the challenge and sent Scylla, a true professional who had twenty-five coitus before giving up... Messalina continued through the night and, after declaring that she was still not satisfied after having lain with seventy men, she continued until dawn. The final count was two hundred…
  • Lupae :those who practiced their trade in brothels.
  • Noctilucae :those who only worked at night.
  • Copae :those who work in the Caupona (It was a quick drink store and ready-made cold foods – usually wine, cured meats, cheeses or pickles – that you could drink or take away. There were no benches or tables, but an outside bar where customers for an ace could warm up with a glass of wine and something to gnaw).
  • Fornicators :those who do it under the arches of bridges or buildings. The term fornix means bow where fornicate (have sex with a whore) comes from.
  • Forariae :they worked on rural roads near Rome and their main clients were travellers.
  • Bustuariae :near cemeteries… with a bit of mystery.
  • Prostibulae :in the street without any control. Let us remember that according to what Tacitus, a Roman historian, wrote, women who wanted to be prostitutes were obliged to register with the edile office. . Once registered (name, age, place of birth, and their "war name"), the license was granted (licentia Stupri )
