History of Asia

Emperor Saimei, the demon, and the worship

This is a continuation of the previous "Oni Story".

I mentioned that the demons that appear in the item of Emperor Saimei in "Nihon Shoki" are likely to be "passionate energy" such as "grudge" or "evil demon". Last time, I introduced the description of "Nihon Shoki", but since the document called "Fuso Ryakuki" written at the end of the Heian period also contains a description of the relationship between Emperor Saimei and the demon, I will introduce that document. I will consider it while doing it.

What is the content of Fuso Ryakuki?

As an event in the first year of Saimei (655)

Furthermore, in the summer of 661

* Quoted from the mystery of Mr. Mononobe, the kingship that was erased.

The above is written in "Fuso Ryakuki". In "Nihon Shoki", the name of the person who causes the tatari, which was not written in a blurred manner, is written. Although it was not written in the direct word "oni", it can be regarded as the same thing as "oni" in "Nihon Shoki".

This Minister Soga Toyoura Refers to Soga no Emishi. Depending on the book, it may be called Soga no Iruka, but basically it seems to be Soga no Emishi.

Why did you write about tatari in Nihon Shoki in a blurred manner?

The article and content I wrote about Nihon Shoki will be covered, but I think the most conceivable line is to enhance the legitimacy of those in power at that time.

"Nihon Shoki" describes the period up to Emperor Jito, but Emperor Tenji (39th generation), Emperor Jito (41st generation), Nakatomi Kamatari There isn't much bad written about.

Emperor Tenmu who instructed the compilation of "Nihon Shoki" Even though it is written that even (41st generation) was destroyed by the worship of Kusanagi no Tsurugi (Amenomurakumono sword). The description by Kusanagi no Tsurugi is very similar to the description by Emperor Kanmu (737-806) in later history books (in the case of Emperor Kanmu, it is said to be a tatari with a ten-handed sword). What they have in common is that they were not official crown princes, which seems to imply their criticism.

Since the compilation peak of "Nihon Shoki" itself was during the endowment period (717-723) in the Nara period, Emperor Tenmu's influence was weakened . Points are also possible. Empress Gensho during the endowment period During the reign of (44s), his father was the son of Emperor Tenmu and Empress Jito, Prince Kusakabe . , Mother is Emperor Tenji's 4th Princess Empress Genmei He is a person in his 43s who can be considered both Tenchi and Tenmu.

Did Emperor Jito prioritize the bloodline of Emperor Tenji? It is no wonder that the former Emperor Tenji has that policy, but it seems to be a weak ground for not writing Emperor Tenji badly.

So who did it unless it was instructed by Empress Gensho? Was it possible to make that description? If you think about it, Fujiwara no Fuhito , who was also greatly involved in the compilation. I think it's natural for me to be a key man.

About the half-life of Fujiwara no Fuhito

Fujiwara no Fuhito Is the son of Nakatomi Kamatari. His father died at the age of 11, and was 13 years old in the Jinshin War. There was no merit or punishment in the Jinshin War, but there was a close relative in the Omi dynasty (Prince Otomo =Emperor Kobun's era), and since then Fumi Tanabe Osumi I live under a person named (Tanabe no Fuhito Osumi). Under such circumstances, Fujiwara no Fuhito was forced to stand up from a lower-ranking official.

The name of Fujiwara no Fuhito first appeared in the literature in February 689. He was appointed as a judge. One year later, Emperor Tenmu's demise and Empress Jito took the throne in 690. At this time, Fuhito was 32 years old.

Time went back and Prince Kusakabe, the son of Empress Jito, became a crown prince in 682, but seven years later, in April 689, he died at the young age of 28. During this time, it is said that Fujiwara no Fuhito was in a position like an adviser to Prince Kusakabe's morning affairs. It seems that Fuhito and Prince Kusakabe were four years old.

And in 697, his daughter Miyako Emperor Monmu (The grandson of Emperor Jito, the 42nd generation), I will let him enter and firmly solidify his feet. She will probably be the second wife of Fujiwara no Fuhito around this time Agata Inukai no Michiyo Komyoko , which is important for the Fujiwara family later Is born in 701.

Agata Inukai no Michiyo Is a light prince born between Prince Kusakabe and Princess Aki (later Empress Genmei). She is believed to have been the nanny of (later Emperor Monmu). I don't know if she mediated or not, but I can guess that there was some point of contact when bringing her daughter Miyako and Emperor Monmu together.

Furthermore, not only the light prince, but also the neck prince born between Emperor Monmu and Miyako. She will also play an active role as a nanny (=later Emperor Shomu). Therefore, Fuhito was able to deepen his relationship with the imperial family even through Michiyo, and was able to produce many aristocrats for more than 1200 years until the early modern period.

Relationship between Empress Jito and Fujiwara no Fuhito

In 686, the year when Emperor Tenmu died, one event that seems to be related occurs. Prince Otsu's strange is.

Prince Otsu "I'm about to rebel," said Prince Otsu's best friend and the son of Emperor Tenji, Prince Kawashima . It is an event that was driven into suicide by a secret notice from. The secret of this rebellion itself is not certain, and there are some suspicious points, so the truth is that it was fitted by a conspiracy.

Prince Otsu Is the third child of Emperor Tenmu, a talented person with a good personality and a lot of credibility. The only drawback is that there is no backing. In that respect, Prince Kusakabe Is her empress at that time, Satoshi Fuchino (= Empress Jito , Uno Sarara), and she had a considerable advantage (not to mention the fact that there are no compliments in history books, etc. in terms of her ability). Naturally, it is believed that the will of Emperor Jito to take his own child to the throne was working in this case.

At this point, the relationship between Emperor Tenji and Fujiwara no Fuhito cannot be found, but this event of "erasing the disturbing person" includes "Isshi Incident" with Emperor Tenji, Nakatomi Kamatari, and the mastermind. It's not because of my mind that it seems to overlap with the event. After all, they are also children of Emperor Tenji and Nakatomi Kamatari, respectively, and after that, there is a fact that Emperor Jito used Fujiwara no Fuhito.

Even if it wasn't an incident involving incompatibility, it may have been seen with such an eye, "If the parents are parents ...". I think it is possible that we approached this incident as a trigger.

Summary

After all, when it comes to saying that "there was a tatari in the middle and big brother Prince and Nakatomi Kamatari," Fujiwara no Fuhito himself is also suspicious. Similarly, when Emperor Jito had a tatari, it seems that he was worried that "Why is Fujiwara no Fuhito safe?"

At the time of Isshi Incident, wasn't there someone behind both the middle and big brother Prince and Nakatomi Kamatari? It is no wonder that Emperor Saimei actually pulled the thread, so I personally think that he used it.

The event that "destroyed Mr. Soga", which had been the centerpiece until then ... let alone the situation where "Mr. Soga's policy may have been correct", so Mr. Soga's regret stands out. The person on the burial side would be even more likely to associate that regret with a mysterious event such as a plague, and would have been afraid. I think that fear led to the appearance of "Oni" in "Nihon Shoki".
