From Queen Bona's kitchen. A foretaste of the St. John's Fair

From 9 to 18 June, in ten Krakow restaurants, you will be able to try dishes inspired by the cuisine of the times of Queen Bona. The chefs of selected restaurants will not miss the precious saffron, roots and products once imported from sunny Italy.

The action is attended by the following restaurants:Albertina Restaurant &Wine, Biała Róża, Bistro 11, Filipa 18, Gościnna Chata, STóŁ, Twój Kucharz, Wesele, Wierzynek and Winestone. The special menu - each place has its own - includes, among others capon with asparagus and royal groats, guinea fowl with tomato and onion jam, asparagus and millet, cuckold ossobuco baked in garlic-juniper sauce on undergrowth, or roasted turkey leg with chestnuts with saffron, almonds and fennel in citrus and honey sauce.

- Looking for inspiration, we looked at Renaissance herbariums, we looked at the plates of the professors of the Krakow Academy during the dinner given in 1568 at the Collegium Maius. in "The Life of a Good Man" by Mikołaj Rej - explains Magda Wójcik, the coordinator of the campaign. Each of the chefs who take part in the action "From the kitchen of Queen Bona" translated these inspirations into a modern culinary language. To try the dishes, just go to one of the restaurants and instead of the daily menu, reach for a menu specially prepared for this occasion.

- The culinary heritage of Poland is very rich. Few people realize how diverse the court cuisine was in the 16th century and how it differed from what the lower classes ate. We will try to show it during the Midsummer Fair - says Robert Rozciecha, deputy director of the Krakow Festival Office.

Meetings with Queen Bona's cuisine are a prelude to this year's Midsummer Fair, to which Historical Curiosities invite you on June 16-18.

The action "From Queen Bona's Kitchen" announces the Renaissance Midsummer Fair, which will take place on the Czerwieński Boulevard near Wawel. The eighth edition of St. John's Fair will start on June 16 and will last until June 18.

The protagonist of the first day will be Anna Jagiellon, who is preparing for a ball organized for her in the game gardens by Henryk Waleze. The leitmotif will be dance workshops, fashion shows enriched with dell'arte comedy scenes. In the evening, Henryk Walezy will arrive on the barge of the Horyzont Zdarzeń Foundation on the barge of the Horyzont Zdarzeń Foundation, who will be welcomed by the entire mansion on the waterfront.

On the second day, we will celebrate the name day of kings Zygmunt:the Old and August - nine years old, even before the coronation. On this occasion, various shows have been planned, and the Retinue of All Fraternities will pass through the Main Square and will encourage city residents and tourists to have fun together on the Czerwieński Boulevard.

A meeting of an extraordinary couple will take place at the Fair, here immortalized in a painting by Jan Matejko.

On Sunday, June 18, King Stefan Batory will arrive at the Fair, accompanied by hussars. Here he will meet his wife Anna Jagiellonka and together with all the brotherhoods they will celebrate the happy return of the king from the war with Moscow in Livonia.

The culinary reconstruction during the Midsummer Fair will be dealt with, among others, by Małgorzata Krasna-Korycińska, a culinary historian, archaeologist and museologist, or Hanna and Paweł Lis, who recreate recipes from the times of the ancient Slavs and serve dishes based on lentils and groats, as well as show how food was preserved in the old days, and Anna Rumińska (" Weedożercy ”) will talk about the uses of wild plants, cuisine and herbal medicine.
