Nikita Khrushchev

Coming from a humble family, a shepherd then a worker, he took part in the Bolshevik revolution in 1917. Nikita embarked on a political career and joined the central committee of the Communist Party of the USSR in 1934, and the Supreme Soviet in 1937.

He played an active role in World War II defending Ukraine and Stalingrad, which earned him an appointment as a general. In 1953, following the death of Stalin, he became the first secretary of the Communist Party of the USSR. He will endeavor to carry out a policy of de-Stalinization by denouncing the cult of personality and the crimes committed by Stalin. In foreign policy, he advocates dialogue and respect for peaceful coexistence.

In 1958, he became Prime Minister. But his agricultural reforms and his foreign policy are experiencing a real failure, which led in particular to the Cuban missile crisis. US President Kennedy issues an ultimatum to Khrushchev for the destruction of Soviet missile launch pads aimed at the United States. He was dismissed from his post in 1964.

He died of a heart attack in a hospital in Moscow in 1971 and was buried in Moscow without a state funeral and without burial in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis.
