Isabella of Castile is the daughter of King John II of Castile. In 1469 she married King Ferdinand of Aragon of Spain. On the death of Henry IV, Isabella proclaimed herself queen of Castile in 1474. The war of succession that followed, and in which Isabella won the victory, lasted from 1475 to 1479. Ferdinand and Isabella then each reigned over their territory. .
In 1492, it completed the Reconquista by seizing Granada, then under Muslim domination. Pope Alexander VI then named Ferdinand and Isabella Catholic Kings in 1494.
Isabelle applies a policy of expansion by participating in the financing of the first voyage of Christopher Columbus. Spain then participates in the Great Discoveries.
The queen also fought against non-Catholics and strengthened the Spanish Inquisition. When he died in 1504, Spain became a great European power.
