Blanche of Castile (1188 - 1252)

Granddaughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Blanche was promised in 1200 to the future King Louis VIII. This marriage has for main purpose a reconciliation between France and England. Queen of France in 1223, she gave birth to twelve children. The rigor of the moral and religious education that she gave to her children also earned Blanche the approval of the clergy. Regent on the death of Louis VIII in 1226, the queen encountered however the hostility of the barons, probably hostile to the government of a woman, and eager to take advantage of a weakening of the royal authority Blanche only thwarted the coalition by dividing it. His son Saint Louis left him great political influence, even after his majority in 1234. It was to her that he entrusted the regency during the seventh crusade in Egypt.
