Rouget de Lisle Claude Joseph(1760 - 1836)

French engineer officer. He composed in 1792, in Strasbourg, the words and the music of the Marseillaise. Imprisoned during the Terror, released on the death of Robespierre, he composed songs, romances, plays (the School of Mothers, 1798). But he remained in the shadows until Louis-Philippe granted him a pension.
