Raymond VI of Toulouse(1156 - 1222)

Count of Toulouse, he is the heir of Raymond de Saint-Gilles who took part in the first crusade. In Toulouse, he maintains communal freedoms. A refined poet, he did not like war but did not lack energy. The assassination of the papal legate provoked his excommunication and the Albigensian crusade. After the capture and massacre of Béziers, the siege and capture of Carcassonne and the death of Trencavel, he sided against the royal army. He takes over the city of Toulouse from Simon de Montfort. The death of Louis VIII will restore most of his county to him.
