Louis VII the Younger (1120 - 1180)

Son of Louis VI and Adelaide of Savoy. Just before his accession to the throne, he married the heiress of Aquitaine, Aliénor. He governed alongside his father's excellent adviser, the Abbé de Saint-Denis, Suger. To weaken his vassals, he multiplies the concessions of privileges to rural communities and promotes the communal movement. Very pious, he answered the call of Bernard of Clairvaux for a new crusade (1147-1149). It was during this expedition that the quarrel between the king and his wife would have been born, which was to lead to a divorce with disastrous consequences for the kingdom. Eleanor immediately remarried Henry II Plantagenet, King of England in 1154. Unable to weaken his adversary, Louis VII supported the Archbishop of Canterbury and the rebellious sons of Henry II. Louis VII becomes close to the Count of Flanders and the Count of Champagne, whose daughter he marries, Adèle, mother of Philippe Auguste.
