Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 - 1153)

Originally from a noble family, Bernard became a monk in the Cistercian abbey of Cîteaux in 1113. He founded the Abbey of Clairvaux in 1115. Under his direction, the Abbey of Clairvaux developed considerably and became the most eminent abbey of the Cistercian order. The rumor that Bernard would perform many miracles and his eloquent sermons attract many pilgrims. His personality and his spirituality considerably influence the Christian West. He intervenes in public affairs and advises princes, bishops and popes. He would have written the rule of the order of the Templars. In 1146, Bernard begins to preach for the second crusade. The failure of the crusade is a great disappointment for Bernard. He died in 1153, he was canonized in 1174.
