Charles X Gustav (1622-1660) - the king of Sweden, in 1655 he invaded Poland. He was born in Nyköping Castle in 1622 as the son of Katarzyna Wazówna and Jan Kazimierz Wittelsbach. He and his siblings grew up in the Swedish court, ruled by his mother's stepbrother, followed by his daughter Krystyna, who - when she ascended the throne - made a promise to marry her cousin.

In the final phase of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), Karol Gustaw was the commander of the Swedish army. In 1649, with the support of Christina and the Swedish nobility, and against the magnates, he was proclaimed the heir to the throne of Sweden. In 1654, when the queen abdicated, he ascended the throne. He pursued a policy aimed at Sweden taking control of the Baltic Sea.

Part of the Polish nobility believed that Karol Gustaw would be a better king than his not very popular cousin Jan Kazimierz and offered him the crown. It was a pretext to start the Second Northern War, the Polish episode of which is called the Swedish Deluge. When Karol Gustaw invaded Poland, the balance of power was upset and the neighboring countries, fearing the rise of Sweden's power, formed a strong coalition against it.

The Swedish king first planned the conquest and partition of Poland, and later wanted to do the same with Denmark. However, he failed to implement his intentions. He only managed to plunder Poland completely. While he was in Gothenburg in 1660, he had a stroke that night and died.
