China and Japan as contrasting examples of a collision with the West in the 19th century

by Gerard Piera

Making a retrospective analysis of the economic, political and , military and social power of China and Japan in the mid-18th century, one could hardly imagine that a century and a half later, at the end of the 19th century, China would go from being the leading power in Asia –and surely in the world– to being a impoverished, politically irrelevant and socially troubled country.
