Why are they called Aztecs?

The word "Aztec" is an exonym derived from the Nahuatl word "Aztecah", which was the demonym for the people of Aztlan, a mythic homeland in the north. The word "Aztecah" is thought to be derived from the Nahuatl word "aztatl", which means "heron". The Aztecs themselves referred to their empire as "Culhua Mexica" or "Mexica Tenochtitlan", with "Mexica" being the ethnic name for the Nahuas of the Valley of Mexico and "Tenochtitlan" being the name of their capital city.
