Before making sail the day after battle, the Achaeans in Odyssey performed funeral rites for their fallen comrades. They gathered wood and built funeral pyres, placing the bodies of the deceased upon them. Then, they set the pyres alight and let them burn until the bodies were consumed by the flames. Once the burning was complete, they quenched the embers with wine and gathered the remains of the bones into urns. These urns were then covered in layers of fat and buried in pits dug into the ground. Finally, they poured libations and offered prayers to the gods in honor of the departed. By performing these rites, the Achaeans honored the memory of their fallen comrades and ensured their peaceful passage into the afterlife.
