Samurai feared losing their exclusive dominance in battle, which could erode their prestige and authority in society.

- Firearms could be used by people of any background or training. This meant that samurai could be defeated or killed by non-samurai, which they considered unacceptable. Samurai viewed muskets as a threat to their elite status and privileged social position.
