How long did it take for the Roman Empire to fall?

The Roman Empire took several centuries to fall. Traditionally, the fall of the Western Roman Empire is placed in 476 AD, when the Germanic general Odoacer deposed Romulus Augustulus, the last Emperor of the West. The fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire, is dated to 1453 AD, when the Ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople, the capital of the Empire.
