What were the states of Persian empire called?

The states of the Persian Empire were called satrapies. A satrapy was a province or region of the empire, and it was governed by a satrap, who was appointed by the emperor and was responsible for collecting taxes, administering justice, and maintaining order. The satrapies were often named after the people or region that they were located in, such as Persis, Media, and Babylonia.
