What did the god Hermes represent?

The Olympian god Hermes was a divine messenger, herald, and psychopomp who guided souls to the underworld. He was a god of boundaries, crossroads, and traveling. He was also the patron deity of merchants and thieves, and as a trickster god, he enjoyed mischief and pranks. Associated with the transition between life and death, Hermes helped souls cross over to the afterlife.
