Why did people go on the third crusade?

The desire to retake Jerusalem from Saladin: Muslims had retaken Jerusalem in 1187, leading many European Christians to believe that it was imperative that they retake control of the city.

Political alliances: Some Crusaders were motivated by desires to gain political power or secure alliances with other rulers, hoping that the third crusade would help them achieve these goals.

Religious fervor: Many Crusaders were driven by religious devotion and a desire to fulfill what they saw as a holy duty to fight for the liberation of Jerusalem.

Adventurers: For some individuals, the Crusades offered an opportunity for adventure and excitement, as well as the potential for financial gain through looting and plundering conquered territories.

Escapism: Crusading also offered a way for some people to leave behind difficult situations, personal problems, or debts by joining the Crusade and seeking a new beginning in the Holy Land.
