Ancient history

What would medieval peasants be doing in towns?

1. Seeking refuge. During times of war or civil unrest, peasants would seek refuge in fortified towns. Castles, which were often located in towns, provided a safe haven for peasants who were fleeing from violence or persecution.

2. Buying and selling goods. Peasants would come to towns to buy goods that they could not produce themselves. These goods included food, clothing, tools, and luxury items. Peasants would also bring their own goods to towns to sell, such as crops, dairy products, and livestock.

3. Access to healthcare and education. Peasants who lived close to towns would often come into town to access healthcare and education. Towns had more doctors, surgeons, and scholars than rural areas, so peasants who needed medical care or education would often travel to towns to get it.

4. Religious pilgrimage. Many medieval peasants would undertake religious pilgrimages to holy sites located in towns. These pilgrimages were often seen as a way to gain favor with God and to atone for sins.

5. Legal matters. Peasants who had legal disputes or other legal matters to attend to would often come to towns to see a judge or other legal official.
