What age did you have to be go into a workhouse in the Victorian age?

In the Victorian age, the minimum age for admission to a workhouse varied over time and according to local discretion. However, generally, children under the age of 16 were not admitted to workhouses unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. In some cases, workhouses could admit orphans and deserted children but they often faced harsh conditions including being separated and forced to hard labour.
