Were colonial tailors trained by parents?

Colonial tailors were usually trained through an apprenticeship system, similar to other trades during that time. They did not typically receive training from their parents, unless the parents themselves were also tailors.

Apprenticeships typically lasted between 5 to 7 years, during which time the apprentice would work under the supervision of a master tailor and learn the skills of the trade. They would start by learning basic tasks and progress to more complex techniques as their skills developed.

By the end of their apprenticeship, tailors would have acquired the knowledge and experience needed to create a variety of clothing items, from simple garments to more elaborate and tailored pieces. They might eventually set up their own tailoring shops or work as journeymen for other tailors.
