What cloths did Colonial Virginia wear?

Upper-Class Clothing

* Men:

- knee-length coats and waistcoats made of fine wool, silk, or velvet

- tricorne hats

- linen shirts

- silk stockings

- leather shoes with buckles

* Women:

- gowns made of silk, satin, or wool, often with elaborate trim

- petticoats

- corsets

- lace caps

Middle Class and Lower-Class Clothing

* Men:

- wool or linen shirts

- leather or cloth breeches

- stockings

- shoes

- hats

* Women:

- wool or linen dresses

- aprons

- shawls or cloaks

- bonnets

Children

* Boys:

- similar to men's clothing, but smaller

- sometimes wore dresses until they were about 5 or 6 years old

* Girls:

- similar to women's clothing, but smaller

- often wore pinafores over their dresses
