The Mamluks, who ruled Egypt and Syria from the 13th to the 16th century, introduced and extensively used a new weapon in their fight against the Crusaders. This weapon was the "mamluk sword," also known as the "shamshir." It was a curved, single-edged sword that was effective in close combat.
