At the time of early European contact, Atakapa men wore breechclouts in the warmer months, and breechclouts and tunics, made from deer or buffalo skin, in the cooler months. They wore moccasins or went barefoot and adorned themselves with earrings and necklaces.[2] Their hair was worn long and decorated with feathers and beads.

Women usually wore wrap-around skirts and short shifts (tunics or dresses). They also wore moccasins, adorned themselves with earrings and necklaces, and wore their hair long.
