Were the Persians monotheistic or polytheistic?

The ancient Persians practiced polytheism. They worshipped a multitude of gods and goddesses. The Persian religion, Zoroastrianism, also known as Mazdaism, was the official religion of the Persian Empire. Zoroastrianism is a dualistic religion that believes in the conflict between good and evil. The pantheon of the Persian gods included the supreme god Ahura Mazda, the evil god Angra Mainyu, and various other deities.
