What did the British impose upon colonists?

Navigation Acts

- Passed in the late 17th-early 18th century.

- Required that colonists get specific goods exclusively from the British and had to ship colonial products on British vessels to British ships.

Taxes

- The Sugar Act of 1764

- placed various duties on foreign-made sugar and molasses imported into the American colonies.

- The Stamp Act of 1765

- imposed a duty on nearly all printed materials produced in the colonies.

- The Townshend Acts of 1767

- placed taxes on lead, glass, paper, paint, and tea.

The Quebec Act of 1774

- expanded the province of Quebec into the Ohio River Valley (previously, land west of the Appalachians had been claimed by several colonies),

- Guaranteed the French-Canadian inhabitants freedom of religion, the retention of their Civil Code and the French legal system,

Proclamation of 1763

- forbade settlement by American colonists west of the Appalachian Mountains.
