Did medieval people get punished for not wearing the right clothes?

Yes, in many medieval societies there were sumptuary laws in place which regulated what people were allowed to wear. Sumptuary laws established which colours, fabrics and styles were permitted to wear based on social status and occasion. For example, in medieval France, the colour red was largely reserved for the nobility and wealthy elites. Those caught violating sumptuary laws were often punished with fines or even imprisonment.
