How were government and religion or church state related in New England the middle colonies?

In New England, the Puritans established a close relationship between government and religion. The Puritan church was the official religion of the colony, and church membership was required for holding public office. The government enforced religious orthodoxy, and those who dissented from the Puritan faith were often persecuted.

In the Middle Colonies, there was a greater degree of religious toleration. The Dutch Reformed Church was the official religion of New York, but other Protestant denominations were also allowed to worship freely. In Pennsylvania, founded by William Penn, there was complete religious freedom. As a result, the Middle Colonies attracted a more diverse population than New England.
