L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland, Canada, is widely accepted as the only confirmed Viking settlement in North America. It was discovered in 1960 by Norwegian archaeologist Helge Ingstad and his wife, Anne Stine Ingstad. This site dates to the 11th century, roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas.
