What is the supreme council of ancient roman republic?

The supreme council of the ancient Roman Republic was the Senate. The Senate was a body of about 300 men who were appointed by the consuls, usually from among the leading citizens of Rome. The Senate's powers included passing laws, declaring war, negotiating peace treaties, and overseeing the finances of the state. The Senate also advised the consuls on matters of policy and served as a check on their power.
