Neolithic people cooked a variety of foods, mostly those that could be grown locally, such as vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes, as well as nuts and seeds. They domesticated animals, including sheep, goats, cattle, pigs, and poultry, and used their milk and meat for food, as well as their hides for clothing and shelter. They also cooked fish and other seafood if available. Grains such as wheat, barley, and oats were ground into flour and used to make bread, porridge, or other dishes. Neolithic peoples also used fermentation to make alcoholic drinks. Some tools used in cooking included:
- Stone mortars and pestles for grinding grains and nuts.
- Clay pots and bowls for cooking stews and soups.
- Spatulas and spoons made from wood or animal bones for stirring food.
- Grills and ovens made from stones or baked clay for roasting meat and fish.
- Fires were created by either friction or flint and steel.
