Why did the Aztecs gauge their ears?

Ear piercing

Ear piercing was also one of the oldest, most common modifications of the human body in Mesoamerica, and continues extensively today. Pierced earlobes were an important Aztec status symbol, and were frequently adorned with jewellery – even in death, as some burials from the Templo Mayor have revealed. Most common were simple holes (sometimes stretched to admit large ornaments) and a form of piercing of the upper portion of the ear called ahlatli (Nahuatl, lit. 'watered'), done most often with young men from notable lineages, and associated with the rulers of Huexotzinco and Tlacopan.
