How was the Seleucid empire formed?

The Seleucid Empire was formed in 323 BC by Seleucus I Nicator. He was a Macedonian general under the command of Alexander the Great and became a ruler after Alexander's empire was divided into several smaller states. Seleucus acquired territories in the Middle East, parts of Anatolia, modern Iran and Central Asia. He founded the city of Antioch on the Orontes River in what is now Syria, and made it the capital of his empire.
