William Dawes and Samuel Prescott were two of the riders who, along with Paul Revere, warned colonists of the British advance on Concord, Massachusetts, on the night of April 18-19, 1775.

William Dawes

* Born in Boston in 1745

* A successful businessman and patriot

* Member of the Sons of Liberty

* Chosen by Paul Revere to ride to Concord to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock of the British advance

* Departed from Boston at about the same time as Revere, but took a different route

* Was stopped and questioned by British soldiers at a checkpoint in Cambridge, but managed to escape

* Continued on to Concord and warned Adams and Hancock

* Returned to Boston with Revere and Prescott

Samuel Prescott

* Born in Concord, Massachusetts, in 1751

* A farmer and patriot

* Member of the Minutemen

* Chosen by the Committee of Safety to ride to Concord to warn Adams and Hancock of the British advance

* Departed from Lexington, Massachusetts, just after Revere and Dawes

* Was stopped and questioned by British soldiers at a checkpoint in Concord, but managed to escape

* Continued on to Concord and warned Adams and Hancock

* Remained in Concord to fight the British the next day

Dawes and Prescott both played important roles in warning the colonists of the British advance and helped to ensure the success of the American Revolution.
