What did they do about the slaves in 1865?

The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, passed by Congress in January 1865 and ratified by the required number of states in December of that year, abolished slavery in the United States. The amendment declares that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
