What was a difficulty faced by the Indians under Dawes act?

Allotments were too small to sustain a family.

The Dawes Act allotted each Native American family a parcel of land which varied in size. However, many of these allotments were less than 160 acres, the number the government estimated would be sufficient to support a four-person family. Consequently, it became increasingly difficult as the years went on for Native American families to support themselves.
