Where did the sans culottes get their name from?

Sans-culottes is a term that originated during the French Revolution (1789–1799) to describe Parisians and other revolutionaries who did not wear knee breeches (culottes). The Jacobins, the most radical faction during the French Revolution, considered short pants the preferred dress of the "true democrats". The revolutionaries believed that knee-breeches were a symbol of the wealthy and privileged classes, while their informal long pants were a sign of their commitment to equality and liberty. The term sans-culottes literally translates to "without knee-breeches".
