When was the first modern mattress made?

The first modern mattress was made in the 1800s. In the early 1800s, the United States Navy began using rope-spring mattresses made of canvas. In the 1830s, Henry Westphal designed one of the first innerspring mattresses; unfortunately, his financial backer pulled out and he was unable to go through with production. In the 1850s, Westphal's mattress design was introduced into England and became somewhat of a luxury at the time.
