The Spanish conquistador who conquered the Aztec Empire in Mexico was Hernán Cortés. He arrived in Mexico in 1519 with a small force of men and quickly gained the support of the native people who were discontent with the Aztec rule. Cortés and his men defeated the Aztecs in a series of battles and captured their capital city, Tenochtitlan, in 1521. The Spanish Empire then ruled over Mexico for the next 300 years.
