In 1869, Thomas Adams, while searching for a new substance to use in the production of rubber, accidentally melted together a batch of chicle gum. He rolled it into balls and began to sell it as novelty confection. Adams' gum was a huge success and he soon quit his job at a rubber factory to devote his time to manufacturing gum, forming Adams & Sons Company.
