* The master chef. The master chef was the head of the kitchen and was responsible for all aspects of food preparation. He or she would typically have a team of apprentices and assistants working under them. The master chef would be responsible for creating menus, ordering supplies, and supervising the preparation of food.

* The journeyman chef. The journeyman chef was a chef who had completed their apprenticeship and was qualified to work independently. Journeyman chefs would typically work in large kitchens or for wealthy families. They would be responsible for preparing all aspects of a meal, from start to finish.
