The Aztecs originated from northern Mexico, in a region known as Aztlan. They were initially semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers. Later, they developed into a powerful civilization that built and ruled the city of Tenochtitlan, which was the capital of the Aztec Empire.
Did The Aztecs Move?
The Aztecs initially migrated to the central highlands of Mexico, possibly in search of more fertile lands and better climate conditions. They arrived in the Valley of Mexico around the 12th or 13th century and established themselves as the dominant power in the region.
The Foundation Of Tenochtitlan:
The Aztecs chose an island site in the middle of Lake Texcoco, where they founded the city of Tenochtitlan. The city quickly grew into a thriving center of trade, commerce, and cultural development. Tenochtitlan became the heart of the Aztec Empire, housing impressive temples, palaces, markets, and residences.
Aztec Empire Expansion:
From Tenochtitlan, the Aztecs extended their influence and control over much of central and southern Mexico. Through skillful diplomacy, military conquests, and alliances, the Aztec Empire reached its peak during the 15th and early 16th centuries, extending from the Valley of Mexico to as far as present-day Guatemala and El Salvador.
Arrival of the Spanish:
In the early 16th century, the arrival of Spanish conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes marked a turning point for the Aztec Empire. The Spaniards allied with indigenous groups who were discontent with Aztec rule, leading to the siege and eventual downfall of Tenochtitlan in 1521. The Aztec Empire was defeated and the Spanish established their control over Mexico.
