The Roman Republic had expanded to control most of the Italian peninsula by 270 BC. This included the regions of Latium, Etruria, Umbria, Picenum, Samnium, Campania, Apulia, and Lucania. The Republic had also conquered the Greek cities of southern Italy, as well as Sicily and Sardinia. In addition, the Romans had established a presence in Gaul and Illyria.
