* Disease. Disease was another major killer of soldiers. In the 19th century, diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, and smallpox killed more soldiers than combat did.
* Accidents. Soldiers could also die from accidents, such as falls, getting caught in explosions, or being crushed by vehicles.
* Exposure. In cold climates, soldiers could die from exposure to the elements. They could also die from heatstroke in hot climates.
* Malnutrition. Soldiers who did not have enough food to eat could suffer from malnutrition, which could lead to death.
* Suicide. Some soldiers committed suicide due to the psychological strains of war.
