Did people give presents for birthdays in colonial times?

In colonial America, giving presents on birthdays was not as common as it is today. Birthdays were generally not celebrated in the same way that they are now. Instead, most people celebrated their name day, which was the feast day of the saint they were named after.

However, there is some evidence that people did exchange gifts on birthdays in colonial America. For example, in 1737, Benjamin Franklin wrote to his sister on her birthday and sent her a gift of a book. And in 1769, George Washington wrote to his wife on her birthday and sent her a gift of a piece of jewelry.

So, while giving birthday presents was not as common in colonial America as it is today, it was certainly not unheard of.
