How did early colonists of Jamestown make a living?

Initially, the colonists of Jamestown relied on supplies brought from England and on trade with Native Americans.

However, as the colony grew, the colonists began to develop their economy. They cleared land for farming and raised crops such as corn, wheat, and tobacco. They also raised livestock such as cattle and pigs. The colonists also fished and hunted for game.

In addition to farming and raising livestock, the colonists of Jamestown also engaged in a variety of other economic activities. They built sawmills and gristmills, and they produced lumber, flour, and other goods. They also built ships and traded with other colonies and with Europe.

As the colony grew, the economy of Jamestown became increasingly diversified. The colonists began to produce a wide variety of goods and services, and they traded with a growing network of partners. By the end of the 17th century, Jamestown had become a thriving economic center.
