USS Scorpion was an American nuclear submarine of the Skipjack class. Commissioned in 1959. Nine years later she mysteriously disappeared south of the Azores while on patrol.
The submarine stopped giving signs of life on May 21, 1968. The U.S. Navy admitted that the vessel disappeared on June 6 and began a search for it.
55 American ships and 23 aircraft participated in the searches. It was finally located at the end of October at a depth of almost 3,000 m at a distance of 750 km south of the Azores. The vessel had been cut in two and disintegrated due to the pressure at that depth.
In January 1969, a US Navy commission of inquiry was established. The committee, while ruling out sabotage, did not reach any definite conclusions. Only in 1984, the theory of the explosion of one of the carried torpedoes was proposed as the main reason for the ship's sinking.
However, based on a new declassified document from 1993, evidence indicated that the submarine was sunk, possibly by Soviet action. Researcher Ed Offley, also in his book "Scorpion Down", supported this view by saying that the US Navy covered up the issue to prevent escalation.
New rumors have recently surfaced, based on the latest signals received and sent by the submarine, that the USS Scorpion has been targeted by a Soviet submarine hunter.
According to a naval radio operator, a Soviet submarine had been spotted approaching the Soviet at high speed. As expected, the Pentagon never confirmed these rumors and information. But he never rejected them either...
The submarine was lost on its own.
